Abstract

arious authors have reported that renal vein thrombosis is a possible complication of
nephrotic syndrome due either to primary glomerulonephritis or to glomerulonephropathies
associated with systemic disease. The occurrence of renal vein thrombosis is possible but
rarely described complication of systemic lupus erythematosus.
Recently, we experienced two cases of renal vein thrombosis associated with systemic
lupus erythematosus. After 1-3 years since they had diagnosed systemic lupus erythematosus,
they suffered from the sudden flank pain and increased proteinuria. Renal vein thrombosis
and inferior vena cava thrombosis were detected with abdominal computerized nomography.
Aggressive high dose corticosteroid infusion and anticoagulant therapy with heparin
permitted the thrombus to be dissolved with a maked improvement in clinical symtoms.
These cases showed that we must keep in mind of the possiblity of renal vein thrombosis
in the clinical course of lupus nephritis.
